Suriname is the lung of Dutch football

The Suriname national team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. It was named the Dutch Guiana national team until 1975.

Over the past years, many Surinamese players preferred to play for the Netherlands national team rather than for the Suriname national team, including Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, Patrick Kluivert, Ryan Babel, Aaron Winter, Romeo Castelen, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frenkie de Jonk, Michael John Reizeguer, Orbi Emanuelsson. It is noteworthy that most of these players played for the Italian AC Milan.
