Sinner wins Halle title

World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy won his first grass court title by defeating Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (10-8) and 7-6 (7-2) in the Halle Tennis Tournament in Germany.

The 22-year-old Sinner moved to the top of the world rankings at the expense of Serbian Novak Djokovic by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open, the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments, earlier this month.

In contrast, the 27-year-old fifth-seeded Hurkacz, who won in Halle in 2022, was looking for his second title of the season after winning the Estoril tournament in April.

The Pole will move up from ninth in the world to seventh, a career-best, and will be one of the favourites to do well in London at Wimbledon next week.
