The Nigerian Football Association announced in a special meeting the appointment of former star Fenidi George as coach of the first national football team, succeeding Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro.
George (53 years old) worked under the leadership of former coach Peseiro, and took over the job temporarily after the Portuguese coach's contract was not renewed despite leading Nigeria to the final of the African Cup of Nations, which was held at the beginning of this year, in Ivory Coast, before losing to the hosts.
Then George took over the job temporarily during two friendly matches last March, achieving a 2-1 victory over Ghana, and a 2-0 loss to Mali.
His mission will be to improve the level of Nigerian players and motivate them in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup after a 1-1 draw in the first round at home with the humble Lesotho national team, then a draw with the same score against Zimbabwe on a neutral stadium in Rwanda.
